J'ai pensé à toi ce matin en regardant "un jour sur terre" et en voyant de jolis petits renards....

Brokeback Mountain hit me like a Mack truck. It ran right over my body and left tire tracks –indelible and permanent – on my soul. Overwhelmed, I set off on a journey, a difficult journey that took me up the mountain to rebirth and renewal. As I watched homophobia destroy Jack and Ennis, I was forced to face painful memories locked inside my heart. Suddenly, all the pain, all the hurt, and all the anger exploded. Every day, for more than a month, during long walks, I confronted long-suppressed memories and struggled to come to grips with the demons those memories freed.

My first memory, a happy one, stretches back to the age of five or six. I was holding my grandmother’s hand as she introduced me to her cowboy pals, Bud and Manuel. From their scuffed leather boots to their weathered Stetsons, they looked like real men – lean, muscular, with big, calloused hands and strong faces, tanned by the sun. Bud owned a cattle ranch. Manuel was his foreman. They built barbed-wire fences and rode the range together on horseback. Later on, I realized they also shared a bed.

Bud and Manuel were gay cowboys, even though neither man would have known what “gay” meant sixty years ago. In those days, gay folks were called queers and homos. Nobody who knew Bud and Manuel would have dared ask if they were gay, but everyone sensed Bud belonged to Manuel. They were an inseparable pair, just like my grandmother’s married friends.

I thought a lot about Bud and Manuel after viewing Brokeback Mountain. They are long gone, but I wish they were here to share their story with me. How did they forge a relationship in rural California in the 1940s?

I know all about the homophobia that existed in 1963, the year Jack met Ennis on Brokeback Mountain. I came out that same summer – not in rural Wyoming, but at a liberal California university.
Like Ennis, I kept telling myself, “I ain’t queer”. Finally, after years of tortured denial, I embraced what I am – gay. It was rough then. There were no support groups and no resources available to provide a helping hand as we struggled to accept our sexuality and overcome the hatred and self-loathing society heaped on us. Five of my close friends at Stanford, I later discovered, were also gay, but that was a subject we couldn’t raise with each other until years later. We were too uptight and, I guess, ashamed. So we led our secret lives.

Three visual metaphors from Brokeback Mountain echo in the memories of every gay man who came out when Ennis and Jack were struggling to accept their love: the closet, the bloodied shirts, and the tire iron. Most gay men were wedged in closets so tight and airless we could barely breathe. We all had our bloodied shirts – the secrets and the pain and hurt we experienced. We all feared the tire iron that could strike suddenly and violently. My gay friends have been attacked with everything from broken bottles and baseball bats to rocks and ice picks.

A less than lethal version of the tire iron that killed Jack Twist hit me on a warm summer evening as I walked down Pine Street in Philadelphia. Suddenly, in the glow of twilight, a hate-filled face loomed in front of me. A fist smashed into my head. I sank to my knees, blood streaming onto my shirt. The gay-basher slunk away, a dark, mean figure. I was stunned by his blow, but also shocked by the sudden silence on a street filled with people. Nobody stopped – not a passer-by or a person in a car. “Are gay people invisible?” I asked myself as I tried to staunch the blood. Staggering, I turned down a side street. Two gay guys sitting on a stoop took me in and cleaned me up.

When I got home, the phone rang. It was my parents. They must have sensed the danger form a long distance, but how could I tell them their son had just been attacked by a gay-basher?

This was yet another secret to lock up with all the others.

I was lucky. I survived. Three of my friends in graduate school did not. After years of painful rejection by his homophobic father, Joe swallowed a bottle of sleeping pills. They found his body on a deserted beach. David tried to hide who he was in a loveless marriage. It failed. He called his mother and told her he was going to kill himself. “Why not?” she replied, before hanging up. He disembowelled himself with a steak knife. Ron was forced into an unhappy marriage by his father, a prominent evangelist. Unable to meet his father’s expectations, he put a gun to his own chest and fired a shot through his heart, a final rebuke aimed at his heartless father.

Thos deaths devastated me. Why were the bodies of these smart, talented, but tormented young men lowered into graves before their time? Little by little, I learned to hide those bloodied shirts in the closet stuffed with other painful memories. As Ennis Del Mar says, “If you can’t fix it…you gotta stand it.”

I locked away a lifetime of hate and persecution in an emotional tinderbox that ignited when I saw Brokeback Mountain. Suddenly, all the hurt exploded. I sobbed. Tears flowed, but they couldn’t wash away the stains left by the deaths of my young friends and decades of hurt and secrets unshared.

Brokeback Mountain started me on a journey of self-healing. During my walks, I confronted many things I had long suppressed. Everything came spilling out. With the help of friends, I worked through it all. The journey was difficult. It was painful. I wouldn’t trade that trip for anything. It has led me to self-understanding and self-acceptance. It has filled my soul and my body with a gentle inner peace I have never known. I call it the Brokeback miracle, a gift Annie Proulx and Ang Lee gave to me and to so many other people (…….)

Je ne sais pas si ce que je vais dire est dehors-thème or non.Je trouve interessant et un peu contradictoire ce que un homme hétérosexuel que je connais a dit sur BBM.Il se trouve un peu embarrasé en voyant comme Jack et Ennis se mostrent amoureux l´un de l´autre dans la scène de la seconde nuit à la tente. Pourtant,une de ses scenes favorites c´est celle de sa réunion après quatre ans.Il la trouve si passionée et émouvante¡.
Je ne comprends pas quelle est la différence entre ces deux scènes qui fait être rejetée la première,quand elles sont l´expression de l´amour entre deux hommes...Je voudrais que quelque homme ici pourrais me l´expliquer,parce que je ne comprends pas ses motifs...

Une fois ce choc passé, avec la suite du Film (L'attente et la montée des sentiments entre JACK et ENNIS), la (les) scène(s) de Retrouvailles est (sont) plus tendre, plus affective, plus amoureuse... plus humaine... je pense ! C'est donc plus " acceptable " pour un hétérosexuel !

D'ailleurs, c'est une de mes photographies favorites de ce Film ! J'avais pris le baiser entre JACK et ENNIS comme premier avatar ! J'ai gardé ce même avatar sur les autres Forums auxquels je participe !

Bon,Gayfred,hier quand je t´ai écrit la réplique à ton post,il est déjà un peu tard pour continuer à t´écrire,excuse moi... Je ne m´ai éxpliqué bien alors,parce que je m´avais référé a la seconde nuit à la tente,avec ces jeux amoureux qui sont à mon avatar ceux qu´il trouvait dificil à voir pour lui-pas la première nuit de sa découverte sexuelle-,bien qu´il trouve la scène où ils se rétrouvent parmi ses favorites.
Peut-être un des "problèmes" avec des hommes hétérosexuels c´est que des hommes se comportent comme il est éspéré parmi les femmes,mais pas en un supposé "fort" et "dur" humane être comme les hommes doivent ètre,selon sociaux clichés...Et ses clichés s´accordent mieux avec la scène du rétrouvament,qui est toute pasion and force.
Je ne me réfère pas aux aspects émotionaux de la scène; bien sur,one n´a pas besoin d´ètre gay ou une femme pour apprécier l´amour qui est battant entre ces deux personnes-son sexe n´importe pas,réellement-.C´est seulement la question d´ètre sufissantment sensible devant une si grande explosion de sentiments... Non,je me réfère aux sens physiques et/où érotiques de la scène,qui la peut faire plus "appropriée" pour la sensibilité masculine et hétérosexuelle.Quelle est votre opinion?.
